Mimetic Sampling
Mimetic sampling is an experimental method for generating audio tracks that mimic another track. This is achieved through computer listening, tuned according to several parameters like sound timbre, notes or other musical characteristics.
The following pieces are made using my custom mimetic sampler that generates tracks using audio segments from some of my previous compositions.
Composite 35
Composite 35 is a short piece driven by audio composed with a midi sequencer, in which basic midi tracks are matcher with replacement sounds from my older works.
Lent
Lent is a 32 channels composition for an interactive immersive installation. Each independant track have been generated using mimetic sampling. The harmonic and time consistencies is provided through the use of stems from one of my previous composition. The gamelan sounds are provided by Sample library of Casa da Música Javanese Gamelan, while later extract add layers based on synthesis driven by chords detection and other algorithms, as done with Sèmes.
Homochromie
Homochromie is a short piece for wind quintet and mimetic sampler. In this piece, casualness, space and query requests are the links between consonance and dissonance, coherence and incoherence, gesture and approval.
The mimetic sampler in Homochromie is used as a complement to the wind quintet track and merges with it into a larger orchestra in which electronics and acoustic instruments integrate together.
Last words
The mimetic samplers I wrote are heavily based on the FluCoMa project.
